In December, ten years ago, I found myself completely broken by some sad news. The Christmas tree was decorated, the stockings hung. It seemed like the excitement and wonder of the season was suddenly smothered. At the time we lived in Rockport and Adam encouraged me to take some time to myself, I grabbed my camera and set out on a drive. I turned the setting on my camera to black and white and drove around taking pictures of all the Christmas decorations. It seemed fitting. The thing that stood out to me that night was how in the deep pain I could not even forms words to pray, I pictured Jesus sitting in the passenger seat, with His hand on my shoulder. No words were necessary. He knew my pain. He carried it too. I felt hope and peace by the end of the drive. And those black and white photos are still some of my favorite.
Maybe you are in a season of pain and there is pressure to be cheery and decorate every non moving thing in our house. That’s the last thing you need or want to do! Remember Jesus came. Emmanuel, God with us, is with you right now. In the middle of it all. Just imagine Him with you, a hand on your shoulder, kind eyes looking at you. You are not alone. You are loved.
