Psalm 23

The Psalms are like a worship playlist from the Old Testament. They are poems and songs that express the entire realm of situations, emotions, struggles, victories, etc.

This week we look at what is likely the most famous Psalm. It may arguably be the most famous chapter in the entire Bible:  Psalm 23. It is a beautiful snapshot of the spiritual journey.  Begin this week by reading the entire Psalm (it's only six verses) slowly and with fresh eyes and ears. Consider asking the Lord:  1) What is the most important thing you want me to know from this Psalm this week? 2) Is there anything you want me to do?

INVITATION:  Consider using a version of Scripture you don't usually use as you dig into this Psalm this week. Sometimes this helps us not take anything for granted or make assumptions. We can often see the verses with new eyes and hear them with new ears.  You might start your week with this simple prayer that young Samuel prayed:  "Speak Lord, your servant is listening."  (I Sam. 3:8-9).

MONDAY:  Principal: As we follow the Good Shepherd, we learn to surrender to the Lord's leadership: Psalm 23:1-3:  God is not a taskmaster watching closely to catch us when we do something wrong. He is a benevolent leader, intent on restoring our souls and helping us live in freedom.  Read Matthew 11:28-30 for a broader picture of the good shepherd.  He invites all who are "weary."  Other translations use "tired" or "worn out."  Does that describe you?  Notice there is nothing about WHY you might be all those things. The Good Shepherd is simply inviting you and me to lay our burdens and cares on Him.  Is it time for you to go beyond just believing there is a God to trusting your very life to Him and surrendering to His leadership in your life?

TUESDAY:  Principal: As we follow the Good Shepherd, we live according to HIS purpose. Psalm 23:3(b), Matthew 4:19 & Ephesians 2:10.  Things and experiences are not our purpose in life. God has much more in mind, and it is attached to the leadership of Christ in our lives. Are you living into the full purpose that God has for you?  Consider the following quote by C.S. Lewis:   We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased. Are you making mud pies or living into God's plans and purposes?

WEDNESDAY:  Principal: As we follow the Good Shepherd, we walk within the protection of the Lord. Psalm 23:4; Phil. 1:6; Jude 1:1-2 & 24.  God began and will complete what he began. The results are up to Him.  He carries the load and does the work. Are you relying on the Lord's care and strength in your life, or trying to control and carry the load yourself? This requires faith. Sometimes that (having faith) can seem harder than carrying the burdens yourself. doing things yourself. However, that's exactly where Satan wants us:  relying on ourselves and leaving God out of the equation and out of our lives.  You are invited today to consider the image of a sheep. Sheep are not load-bearing animals. We are not camels, horses, or donkeys used to carry heavy loads. We were not designed to carry the weight of the world. Our Great Shepherd does that.  What burden can you hand over today?  How might you make this a daily practice?

THURSDAY:  Principal: As we follow the Good Shepherd, we receive his victory. Psalm 23:5; I Cor. 15:51-58.  Death and sin are the ultimate enemies. However, the victory is ALREADY won.  The power of sin is strong, and it is our condition as human beings. Our position is victory. Are you living in your condition or your position?  Is there an invitation from God for you in this?

FRIDAY:  Principal: As we follow the Good Shepherd, we have peace in His promise.  Psalm 23:6; Revelation 21:3-4. God's goodness is yours for all your days, and eternity awaits all who allow Him to be the Shepherd of their life.  Where are you "dwelling" today?

SATURDAY:  Some questions for reflection from this week's study:

Do you believe in God?

Is God your Shepherd (leader)?

If you are allowing God to lead, are you living for HIS purpose?

Are you living under His victory rather than your own effort?

Does your soul have the peace and rest of God?
